Maou Sadao, the demon lord Satan, wants to conquer the magical world of Ente Isla. However, when he fails, he flees to another world with his loyal general, Alsiel.

They end up in a modern world where they have lost their powers and take a human form. Later they end up meeting Emilia, the hero who ruined their plans in Ente Isla and has followed them to the human world.

However, this new world does not go easy on them, and our great demon lord quickly finds himself more concerned about getting a job so he can pay rent and buy food rather than world domination.

What happens in The Devil is a Part-timer! Seasons 1 through 3

The Devil is a Part-timer! Season 1 shows us Maou and Alsiel’s escape from Ente Isla. When they arrive in Japan, they are forced to live a common life with no powers. Eventually, they’re able to find part-time jobs and a place to stay.

The demon lord believed that he and his general Alsiel were the only ones who came to this world. So, Mao was shocked when one day he ran into Hero Emilia on the streets.

Initially, the hero wants to kill Maou but restrains herself and decides only to observe in case he causes any trouble.

Throughout the season, they are attacked several times by the likes of Lucifer, Olba, and Sariel. But oddly, Maou and Emilia manage to work together and deal with them. The season ends on a good note as they continue to live their normal lives.

Season 2 begins with the introduction of Alas Ramus, who claims to be the demon lord Maou and Hero Emilia’s child. It is later revealed that Alas is formed from a Yesod fragment which allows her to act as a holy sword for Emilia. With the help of Alas, Emilia manages to defeat Gabriel.

Later in the season, Gabriel reappears along with Raguel. They’re after Lailah, an archangel, and Emilia’s mother. But with the help of Lailah and Chiho, Maou and others manage to stop them again. Season 2 concludes at this point.

Season 3 (also referred to as The Devil is a Part-timer! Season 2 Part 2) starts with a focus on Emilia’s dilemma. After finding out that her father is alive, she is unsure about her heroic duties. She decides to visit Ente Isla but promises to come back to the human world in a week.

Three weeks pass but Emilia is still not back which leaves them concerned. When they come together to discuss this, a demon named Libicocco causes a rampage. In the midst of this chaos, two strangers appear who later reveal themselves to be Acieth (Alas’ younger sister) and Nord (Emilia’s father).

Acieth also has powers like Alas and helps Maou in stopping Libicocco. Meanwhile, Gabriel captures Alsiel and Nord and takes them back to Ente Isla.

Maou, Suzuno, and Acieth travel back to Ente Isla, to save Emilia and others. The story from here on continues in Ente Isla.

Devil is a Part-Timer! Season 3 is still ongoing and the 10th episode dropped on 14th September. Maou who has lost his powers is left to rest, while Suzuno and Albert plan to kidnap Nord and Emperor-Unifier.

A distressed Emilia receives a letter from Alsiel, the letter comforts Emilia and she is reassured that Maou will come to help her. The episode ends as Emilia prepares to attack Heavensky.

The remaining two episodes will show us the encounter between Emilia and Alsiel and their armies. Episode 11(23) will be released on 21st September.

The Devil is a Part-timer! Light Novels

The Devil is a Part-timer! is based on a light novel series by Wagahara Satoshi. He started the series in 2011 which came to an end in August 2022.

The light novel series has a total of 21 volumes. Season 1 covered the first two volumes. Season 2 covers Volumes 2 to 5. The Devil is A Part-Timer Season 3 (a.k.a The Devil is a Part-timer! Season 2 Part 2) starts from Volume 6 and is currently in the second half of Volume 10.

It is expected the season finale will complete the entirety of Volume 10. 

The Devil is a Part-timer! also has a manga series that currently has 21 volumes and is still ongoing. Though the anime series only follows the light novels, it doesn’t do so accurately.

There are a few changes in the timelines and many incidents are skipped. Still, it relies only on the Light Novel to adapt the important events and the general plot line.

What to Expect from The Devil is a Part-timer! Season 4?

Though there are no official announcements yet. However, if the anime adaptation continues at the same pace, we can expect Season 4 to start covering Volume 11 of the light novel.

We’ll see the main characters return to Japan after resolving the conflicts in Ente Isla. It’ll continue to follow their day-to-day life, and hence the anime will return to its slice-of-life theme. Nord will also start living with them, and we might see his bond with Emilia get stronger.

Emilia’s conflict with Maou started because of her father’s revenge. But since her father is safe and by her side, Emilia’s reason for revenge will come to an end.

This can probably lead to Maou and Emilia growing closer in the coming episodes.

The Studio behind The Devil is a Part-timer!

Season 1 was animated by White Fox, who has also worked on fan favorites like Steins;Gate, and Akame ga Kill! From season 2 onwards the animation has been led by Studio 3Hz. Some of the other shows they’ve worked on are Gun Gale Online and Dimension W.

The anime also had a change in direction from the second season is now directed by Tsukushi Daisuke. He has also helped direct shows like My Hero Academia and Kingdom.
