What is the series Mushoku Tensei all about?

Following the death of his parents and skipping the funeral, a 34-year-old unnamed Japanese man is thrown out of his house by his siblings. Deeming himself worthless, he intercepts a truck speeding at some teenagers and attempts to save their lives, dying in the process. 

He reawakens in a baby’s body and realizes that he has been reincarnated in a realm of sword and sorcery and vows to succeed in his new life as Rudeus Greyrat, abandoning his previous identity. Rudeus, unlike in his former existence, is determined to make the most of his new life and avoid the mistakes he made in his prior life.

With his newly discovered knowledge, magical talents, and the tutelage of his parents, he embarks on an expedition to become the world’s best magician.

What happened in the last Seasons of Mushoku Tensei?

The first season of Mushoku Tensei covers Rudeus’ life growing up in the quiet countryside village of Buena. At the age of 7, Rudy starts working as the live-in teacher of his cousin Eris to fund magic university tuition for himself and his childhood friend Sylphie. Although he plans to return to his village when he turns 10, Rudeus finds his peaceful life turned upside down when he falls victim to a mana disaster that teleports him and Eris halfway around the world to the Demon Continent. Determined to get Eris safely back home, an unforgiving new adventure begins for the two kids and their new companion.

Midway through the season, Rudeus finds that many of the people of Fittoda were also caught in the incident including his family members and people from his village and Rudy vows to find his family after escorting Eris home. The first season ends with Eris leaving and Rudeus continuing his journey alone, depressed with Eris’s departure but determined to find his mother, Zenith who is the only family member still missing.

At the beginning of season 2, Rudeus is still searching for his mother. This is when he comes across the Counter Arrows, an adventure party that he decides to join to gain fame and spread his name so that word can reach his mother. Seeing the Counter Arrows battle for their life and take risks reignites Rudeus’ spirit to fight. Sylphiette’s story is also revealed, detailing how she made friends with Ariel after saving her from an assassination attempt. The first part concludes with Rudeus and Sylphie reuniting and starting a relationship.

The Story Concluded in the Light Novels

It was announced on November 24, 2022, that the light novels had ended after 8 years of serialization. The series was first published on July 27, 2014, under Media Factory’s Monthly Comic publication.
