The Eminence in Shadow Season 3 Release Date

The second season is currently ongoing and releases a new episode weekly on Wednesday. The show has released 8 of the 12 episodes that were confirmed for this season. If the releases are on schedule, Season 2 will end on December 20, 2023. 

Given that season 2 will not see the end of the story, fans are expecting a Season 3. Based on the release dates of previous seasons and the status of the light novel, we can expect Season 3 to be aired anytime in the second half of 2024. Previously, the studio announced Season 2 a week after Season 1’s completion. If the same is continued, we can expect to see a Season 3 teaser on 27th December 2023. 

What is The Eminence in Shadow about?

Kagenou Minoru aims at becoming as strong as possible but even after endless efforts, there are limits to how strong he can become. After meeting with an accident, he reincarnates as Kagenou Cid. In this new world, swordsmanship and magic are common. We watch Cid venture the path of vigilance where he isn’t guided by morality but by his desire to be a hero.

What has happened so far in The Eminence in Shadow?

Eminence in Shadow Season 1 Episode 1 begins in the normal world. Minoru manages to save a kidnapped girl named Akane. Though Minoru is strong he can’t come to terms with his limited strength. In an attempt to gain magical powers, he meets an accident. When he opens his eyes, he finds himself reincarnated into a magical world as Kagenou Cid. Now with a second shot at life, Cid hopes to fulfill his childhood dream of becoming a masked vigilante.

When he saves an elf girl with no memory whom Cid later named Alpha, she asks him several questions, unable to answer any Cid brews up a story about the Cult of Diablos who were causing these troubles. But Cid is unaware that this “ story ” is closer to the truth than he realizes. He takes up the name “ Shadow ” and under Alpha’s lead forms a vigilante group called Shadow Garden. They work together to save Cid’s sister, Claire, who was kidnapped by Grease, a member of the cult. After being rescued, Claire leaves home to join the Midgar Academy. The Seven Shadows also leave Cid.

We go through a time skip. Cid has also joined the academy. Unlikely circumstances lead him to maintain a fake relationship with a princess, Alexia Midgar. But when she suddenly disappears, all the blame falls on Cid. The Seven Shadow reappears to help Cid from this crisis. 

A few days later, the academy is attacked by fake Shadow Garden members. Cid jumps in when student council president, Rose Oriana, is about to be attacked. Rose assumes that he did it to protect her but in reality, Cid just wanted to die first to fulfill the role of a background character. By stopping his heart at the time of the attack he manages to revive himself. At the last moment, he shows up as Shadow along with the real Shadow Garden and brings the matter to an end.

After these events, Cid travels to Lindwurm where the Goddess’ Trial is being hosted. Rose adds Cid’s name to the challenger’s list. To avoid participating, he causes a distraction. Shadow appears and his presence summons Aurora, the Witch of Calamity. After Shadow defeats Aurora, a magical door appears transporting the main characters to the Sanctuary. In the Sanctuary, Cid meets Aurora again but this time they are on the same side. He goes on to defeat the ancient hero, Olivier, to rescue Aurora and set her free.

Cid decides that he wants to join the Bushin Festival to display his power. He takes up the disguise of Mundane Mann. He acts weak at first but displays his immense power and reaches the finals. He faces Iris, Alexia’s sister. He overwhelms Iris quite easily. He goes on to reveal that he is Shadow. A series of events leads to a fight between Shadow and Beatrix, the first champion of the Bushin Festival. Iris joins the fight and aids Beatrix. But even their combined forces fail. This battle concludes the first season.

Season 2 begins with the Kagenou siblings’ visit to the Lawless City. The city is ruled by three monarchs, Lord Crimson, Yukime, and Juggernaut, each hoping to gain dominance over the city. In order to take over the city, the members of Crimson Tower revive Elisabeth, the Blood Queen, leaving the city in chaos. After losing hold of Cid, Claire meets Mary, a vampire hunter and they decide to join forces. When they reach the Crimson Tower, the Blood Queen has already been revived and targets Claire.

As Claire is on the verge of being possessed, Aurora takes over her body. Aurora engages in battle with Elisbaeth and manages to buy enough time for Shadow’s arrival. Shadow casts a large-scale recovery magic to fix the chaos. 

Mitsugoshi, a company led by one of the Seven Shadows (Gamma), is targeted by bandits sent by Major Corporate Alliance. On the other hand, Cid is displeased by the profit and influence Mitsugoshi has had using the knowledge he shared with them. He decides to reclaim what belongs to him. He takes the disguise of John Smith and works with Yukime, who is now the sole ruler of the Lawless City, to cause a major financial crisis.

Yukime warns John Smith about Gettan who has been controlling the Alliance to destroy Mitsugoshi. Realizing the trouble John Smith is causing, Alpha confronts him. She immediately realizes it is Shadow. Shadow avoids her questions and leaves her behind by stating that she’ll realize it is the best choice.

Yukime reveals her true intentions and talks about her past. She aims not to build a fortune but to bring Gettan down and end him. She leaves to battle Gettan.

 In the latest Episode 7, the Shadow Garden is able to realize Shadow’s plan to take advantage of the situation. Shadow Garden retrieves the gold but John Smith assumes Gettan got hold of it and proceeds to attack him. He fights Gettan to regain his lost gold but Yukime assumes he arrived to protect her. The episode comes to an end as Yukime and Shadow Garden decide to become allies.

The Eminence in Shadow Light Novel

The anime series is based on the Light Novel series by Aizawa Daisuke. The series started in November 2018 and is being published by Enterbrain. At the moment, the series has 6 volumes. Season 1 covered volumes 1 and 2. The ongoing Season 2 completed adapting Volume 3 in its 7th episode. Season 2 is expected to cover up till Chapter 3 of the fourth volume. 

Season 3 is expected to adapt the remainder of the fourth volume and the entirety of Volume 5.

What to expect from The Eminence in Shadow  Season 3?

Though the second season is still running, we can make some safe guesses based on the light novel. Season 2 will end by revisiting the events of the Oriana Kingdom. Season 3 will start with Shadow’s shocking and sudden reappearance in Japan.

Akane, who we only saw in the first episode will also make a return. After the events of Japan, Shadow will return to the academy. But another crisis will arise, as students will start disappearing. The latter half of the season will indulge in solving this mystery.

The Eminence in Shadow will be a fun watch for a lot of people as it manages to mix multiple genres and tropes. Firstly, it follows a protagonist who isn’t exactly moral or evil. These tropes have been seen in Code Geass. Also, the protagonist always feels overpowered similar to other isekai like Overlord and That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime. 

The protagonist though overpowered has a laid-back and casual approach to serious situations, often not realising the weight of his actions. A similar attitude is seen in Rudeus from Mushoku Tensei.
