The Plot of Dark Gathering

Dark Gathering Keitarou Gentouga riding a bike with Yayoi Houzuki, looking up

Gentouga Keitarou is a university student who has the ability to see and attract ghosts. But due to a mishap in his childhood, Keitarou and his childhood friend, Eiko get cursed.

Keitarou happens to meet Yayoi (Eiko’s younger cousin) who is a child prodigy and a master of occult. She can not only sense ghosts but also enslaves them and uses them to fight other ghosts.

Yayoi, who is looking for her deceased mother’s lost soul, promises to help lift off their curses if they help her visit haunted spots.

What happens in Dark Gathering Season 1

Season 1 starts with a look into Keitarou’s past. The traumatic supernatural events of his childhood had drifted him away from society. But now that he is joining the university again, he wants to socialize again. He gets a new tutoring job through which he meets Yayoi.

Together they manage to hunt down a few ghosts but this brings back Keitarou’s fear and he is hesitant to visit haunted places anymore. He doesn’t want his abilities to cause any more harm to others.

But, when Yayoi and Eiko are in danger, Keitarou swifts to their rescue. This leads to Yayoi and Keitarou making a promise to help each other out. Initially, Eiko seems as a mere middleman between Yayoi and Keitarou but it is revealed that she was the one who secretly planned their meeting.

This also reveals her obsession and love for Keitarou and they end up confessing it to each other. But Keitarou is unaware of Eiko’s obsession.

The group later meets Kamiyo Ai, who is Keitarou’s new student. She is also surrounded by a supernatural presence but Yayoi and others manage to help her. But it is revealed that she is not targeted by a mere ghost but by a God.

The god claims Ai’s death will come in four years which confirms that Ai has a much bigger role to play in the story. It can be expected that we’ll see her regularly in the upcoming episodes.

After meeting the God, Yayoi realizes that the spiritual balance has altered which causes her dolls to kill each other. Yayoi then explains her plan to conquer evil spirits all over Japan. She wants to build a fighting force against the god.

In Episode 11, Keitarou and Yayoi visit H Castle Ruins which is considered one of the most haunted spots in Japan. They try to capture powerful ghosts called graduates so they use them against the divine being. But during their exploration of the ruins, they get separated.

Later, Keitarou finds Yayoi again but he finds her body hanging off a rope. Episode 12 will show us what exactly happened to Yayoi and if Keitarou will manage to leave the ruins alive

Expectations for Dark Gathering Part 2/Season 2

The Dark Gathering series has been announced to have two parts for its first season. Season 1 Part 1 is expected to end around Chapter 16 called “ Collection” While Part 2 is expected to cover chapters 17-33.

Chapter 33 marks the ending of an arc so it seems like a suitable spot for the season to end. Chapter 34 is called “ Visiting Kyoto ” and will start a new arc hence is probably where Season 2 will start.

There are no official announcements for either Part 2 or Season 2. Whatever it may end up being called, the next season can be expected to be announced in a couple of months as the manga covering the episodes is already there.

Dark Gathering’s Season 1 was released exactly seven months after its announcement so if we see a similar pattern for the coming seasons, we can expect Part 2 to be released around early 2024.

How scary is Dark Gathering?

Dark Gathering as a horror anime is unique as it does not focus on jumpscaring or frightening the viewers. Instead, it tries to creep out the viewers by going into great detail about the supernatural. The encounters with ghosts are not sudden but the narrative tries to slowly build the creepiness surrounding them. Most characters have a second side to them which adds to the vibe. But there are also comedic reliefs in the show which breaks the circle of creepiness and depression.

Is Dark Gathering worth watching?

Despite its unpopularity, Dark Gathering is a good anime. It has a good cast of characters who are both funny but also have their own dark pasts. The story itself is paced quite nicely which doesn’t make the anime feel sluggish. The supernatural aspect is full of mysteries which makes the viewer continue watching. It is surely an underrated series.

Will I enjoy Dark Gathering if I am not used to horror anime?

Dark Gathering can be enjoyable even for non-horror fans. It has ample scenes of action and the characters often interact in common anime tropes which are funny. There is also a slight presence of romance between two of the main characters. The anime also releases two versions of the same episode, if it has a highly disturbing scene. Episode 5 which has a hanging scene has two versions, the censored version omits the scene for the select group of viewers who rather not see it.

Where can I watch Dark Gathering?

Currently, Dark Gathering is available to watch for free on Muse Asia’s YouTube channel. New episodes are added regularly every week.
